In order to combat the evils of water borne diseases and lack of sanitary facilities affecting human beings. Government of India launched Central Rural Sanitation Programme in 1986. This was an  allocation based. supply driven programme, Subsidy was extended for constructing Individual House Hold Latrine (IHHL)  and the implementation followed a centralized top down approach. TSC promotes campaign approach with demand responsive strategy. The element of belongingness for the rural people was introduced for construction and maintaining their household toilets.

The main objectives of Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) are:

  • Improvement  in quality of life in rural areas

  • Accelerate sanitation coverage in rural areas

  • Generate felt demand for sanitation facilities through intensive awareness and education

  • Promote sanitation in schools

  • Encourage cost effective and appropriate technology in sanitation

  • Reduce and try to eliminate water borne diseases due to sewage contamination

Total Sanitation Campaign has been  launched in Tiruvallur District from 2003-04 . The project period  2018-2019 years.

District there is 1418 school latrine with Urinal units being constructed in rural schools. In additional 185 School Toiled be In the District Government buildings   Anganwadi centers having baby friendly toilets.
